Vague Language Detector

What is the Vague Language Detector?

The Vague Language Detector finds weak, non-specific phrases that make your content harder to trust or quote. Words and phrases like "fast", "many", "significant", or "industry-leading" tell the reader very little, and they give AI search systems nothing concrete to extract.

Why is this useful?

AI search systems favour clear, specific, extractable answers. Vague wording is less useful than a precise, supported statement - both for a human deciding whether to trust you and for a system deciding whether to quote you. This tool surfaces the vague phrases on a page so you can replace them with specifics.
Example: replace "our software saves teams lots of time" with a clearer, measurable statement backed by evidence.

How does the Vague Language Detector work?

The tool analyses your page content and flags words and phrases that are non-specific or unsupported, highlighting each one so you can see it in context and decide on a stronger, more concrete replacement.

How to run a check:

  • From your dashboard, click the 'select your website' dropdown at the top of the page and choose your site. Select Labs from the left-hand menu, and scroll down to find Vague Language Detector.

  • Enter the URL of the page you want to check:

  • Click Analyze Content. The tool scans your content and returns the flagged phrases.
  • Review each flagged phrase in context and revise it into a specific, supportable statement.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Replace, don't just delete. The goal isn't to strip out every soft word - it's to swap vague claims for concrete, verifiable ones.
  • Pair it with the Unanchored Claims Analyzer. Vague wording and unsupported claims often sit together; fixing both makes a page markedly more credible.
  • Keep your voice. Specific doesn't have to mean dry - add the number or detail, but keep it in your own tone.
