Search Intent Highlighting within SEOTesting
This guide will explain Search Intent Highlighting on the SEOTesting app.
Every query-based report within SEOTesting comes with search intent highlighting as standard. When you review reports within your SEOTesting account, this will highlight different search intent on relevant queries.
As standard, SEOTesting comes with three predefined intents highlighted in different colors:
Informational search intent (orange)
Transactional search intent (red)
Commercial search intent (green)
To create our predefined groups, we included the following words in each group:
Informational: What, who, when, where, which, why, how.
Transactional: Buy, order, purchase, cheap, price, discount.
Commercial: Best, top, review, comparison, compare, vs, versus.
Note: Later in this guide, we will show you how to customize search intent keywords or even use a custom category.
Search intent highlighting is available within some of SEOTesting’s query-based reports. This includes the following reports:
Winners & Losers - Queries
Low CTRs by Query
New Keywords
Search Intent Keywords
Long Tail Keywords
Queries with a Low Click-Through Rate
Striking Distance Keywords
All Queries
Search intent modifiers are highlighted in their respective colors within the relevant reports, making it easy to spot these types of keywords while browsing your reports.

Search intent highlighting within SEOTesting is beneficial because it helps marketers quickly understand the purpose behind users' searches, allowing for more strategic decision-making. By categorizing queries into informational, transactional, and commercial intents, this feature provides insight into how users interact with content at different customer journey stages.
Highlighting search intent modifiers helps identify gaps or opportunities in content. For example, if many informational queries are highlighted, it suggests users are seeking knowledge, which means content that educates could be prioritized.
By recognizing transactional or commercial queries, marketers can adjust their SEO strategies to focus on converting users closer to purchasing, potentially increasing conversion rates.
If necessary, you can change the search intent modifiers that appear for informational, transactional, and commercial queries.
You can also add custom search intent modifiers that appear in blue on query-based reports within SEOTesting.
To access the area where you can change your search intent modifiers, start on your SEOTesting dashboard and then click on the ‘Account’ link on the navigation bar on the left side of your screen:
From here, click on the ‘Site management’ tab at the top of the screen:
Select the site that you wish to edit:
Finally, it is here you will see the boxes to edit your search intent modifiers for informational, transactional, commercial, and custom intent keywords:
Note: You must be an account admin to amend your search intent modifiers.
