LLM Test - Setup Instructions

The LLM Test type in SEOTesting is a time-based test that allows you to see how many LLM referred sessions are recorded in GA4 before and after page changes.


To be able to run an LLM Test, you need to have the GA4 integration setup.


  1. From the LaunchPad in SEOTesting, navigate to the site you want to integrate with GA4.
  2. From that site's Dashboard, click on the Edit button that's along the top of the screen
  3. When looking at the website's settings page, click on the Integrations tab
  4. In the GA4 section, click the button to allow 'GA4 Read Only Access' and follow along the OAuth steps to allow this. When selecting a Google account, make sure it is one that has permission to the GA4 property for this site.
  5. Once the Google OAuth screens have returned you to SEOTesting, click back to the integrations tab, and enter the GA4 property id in the new settings space can find the GA4 property id by navigating to GA4 and the property in question. Within GA4 go to Settings -> Property -> Property Details. The Property id will be displayed in the top right of the screen.
  6. Copy that property id into SEOTesting and click Save. You'll get a confirmation pop up in the top right of the screen to confirm this has been successfully saved and SEOTesting now has permission the GA4 property.


Creating an LLM Test

Once you've made changes to a page you want to see cited more in LLM and AI overviews - set up an LLM test in SEOTesting to track the results.

  1. When on the SEOTesting dashboard for the site you are working with go SEO Tests -> Create a new SEO Test -> Create LLM Test.
  2. On the test creation screen, give the test a name and a full description of the changes made to the page
  3. Tag the test if you wish with the type of change you've made. (Tags are pre-defined and will auto-complete if you've used a value before)
  4. The LLM test type can be Page or Site.
  • If you have made a change to an individual page, use the Page test type. You will also need to add the exact match URL you have changed.
  • If you've made changes to the entire site (for example - changed all structured data or main navigation), use the Site test type.
  1. Set the date the change was made.

You can run back tests, so if you can set up tests for historical changes.

  1. Set the test period. Usually the more data you have the better, but you may also want to work around big seasonal events that affect your site.
  2. Finally select the LLM types that you wish to track before and after.


Upon clicking the Create button, you'll be asked to confirm the control and test periods. These are based initially on the change date, and test period - but they are date pickers so you can move them around as needed.
